What is Title IX?
Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex and gender in education. Title IX ensures equity in all aspects of education including athletics and other educational opportunities and programs.
As a student, what are your Title IX Rights?

You have the right to an education.

You have the right to file a complaint against your abuser. You have the right to a clear, well-publicized, and equitable response to your complaint. You have the right to have school employees to help you.

You have the right to be protected from retaliation.

You have the right to reasonable accommodations and services (see section IV for explanation).

You have the right to access supportive services for free (see section IV for explanation).

Title IX protects you, even if you were assaulted by someone not at your school or before you attended your school.

You have the right to be safe from gender-based bullying, harassment, and stalking that occurs, including on online platforms.

You have the right to a no-contact order.

You have the right to know your legal options.
How does Title IX relate to LGBTQIA+ students?
Title IX upholds equal access to educational opportunities and protects LGBTQIA+ students from harassment and bullying. Schools should not discipline queer and transgender students unfairly. Schools should use the student’s correct name and pronouns. Schools should not discipline students for appearing or behaving in a manner that is consistent with their gender identity.


What supportive measures and accommodations are outlined for sexual assault and harrasment survivors under Title IX?
Title IX is designed to restore and preserve equal access to the student survivor’s education program/activity. Some examples include:

Opportunities to retake classes and tests

Adjusting your academic transcript

Counseling

Extensions of deadlines

Modifications of class schedules
