I think there is much to be gained from a collaborative learning experience so that is definitely a highlight of my classes. I like to assign projects that ask students to work together, and also to creatively approach the subject. One end of semester project in AP Lit, for example, asks students to produce something related to a work we’ve read together. For this I give them complete creative license. Seeing what they come up with is my highlight of the entire semester. I'm always in awe of the clever and imaginative ways students connect to the works we've read.
Introduce yourself (Name, department, class number, periods you teach and how long you have been teaching)
What do your classes cover?
ERWC stands for Expository Reading and Writing course (12th grade English). I cover personal statements in the fall, nonfiction novels, and modules of differing topics as we analyze rhetoric and persuasive writing and speaking. We also write in this mode (argumentation) and others (narrative, for example) throughout the year.
I also teach AP Literature & Composition. In this class, we read a lot and write a lot. It’s fun because we delve deeply into the craft of language and read across many genres and time periods.
Whats one fun fact about you?
I have a big family and am one of five (I have four sisters). The sister closest in age to me is 11 months younger, and the last born, my youngest sis, is 11 years younger. I'm grateful we all still live close to each other. Our family events are huge with all of the siblings and significant others and kids!
How should students prepare to take your class? What are things they should know before taking your class?
I would be prepared to be present and engaged in class, with a willingness to grow and learn (and learn from others in a collaborative space). AP Lit students usually love to read and/or write, or want to get better at one or both.
What advice would you give to incoming students?
I would tell potential AP Lit students that if they’re a fan of reading and discussing cool things about literature then there’s nothing to be afraid of and that they’re well-suited for an AP class like AP Lit!
What are some big projects or things you learn in your class?
What are some of your involvements on campus? (ex: advisor for ___ club)
